Just one of the delights of the area where I reside is being able to just stroll down the street for a great no cost evening of terrific music by our Municipal Band. This band has been around for 101 years, the longest on-going Municipal Band in the country. In our town we have all types of free music, free movies on the beach and a great deal of little free rock concerts that occur all summer. But probably none of these match up against the attendance at the Municipal Band Concerts. They are very well known, with overflow crowds’ at all four large city parks where they hold them. In fact, it is so jampacked that I have been doing what so many in our town do on concert day. I have been venturing out to the park initial thing in the morning to stake out my space on the lawn with a blanket and chair to indicate my spot until I come back in the evening. I guess it claims something good about our town that fifty people can abandon their chairs and blankets sitting on a lawn right through the day and they are all still there when we come back to the park at 6Pm that night to be seated and delight in the concert.
By the time the concert begins each week, there are commonly around 200 people sitting at the lawn, many with picnic baskets of amazing goodies and the ever so illegal wine to drink. I do find it funny that they never fail to announce at the beginning of each show that it is against the law to consume alcohol on park premises while everyone inside of earshot of the statement is uncorking their wine bottles and serving them into wine glasses to pass around. But no one has ever gotten rowdy, we are a quite sedate lot who sit and munch our cold chicken, drink our wine and listen to Star and Stripes Forever. The craziest anyone gets is when every Fourth of July show the band asks members of the assorted armed forces to stand when the band plays the theme for their individual branch of the military. Some get very teary-eyed and many sing along very loudly, even if they are tone deaf. But if is very small-town and fairly sweet to see.
My girlfriend and I have been going to these concerts together for roughly five years now, from the time we met and recognized we both loved these concerts. She doesn’t always get out of work in time to be there at the outset, so I will put the food together in the afternoon while I am writing and take it to the park as she is closing up her store and venturing out our way. Despite the fact that they wanted to go down in their fees, they are all union and cannot bring it down any more than they have. So this is the end of an era. And we will be all the poorer to be without it.

I was inspired to try a new workout routine after a recent trip to San Francisco and a tour of the infamous Alcatraz prison. Our tour guide told us the saying: “You go to prison if you break the rules. If you break the prison rules, you go to Alcatraz.” Regardless of whether you are stuck in the most or least strict prison, the bottom line is that you are confined to a very tight space. Even though that is the case, it is still possible to do effective workouts while incarcerated…not that I would suggest turning into a criminal simply to exercise more. The idea behind the prison workout routine is to use bodyweight exercises for strength improvement, rather than utilizing gym equipment.
The great thing about a prison workout routine is that it can literally be applied anywhere. There aren’t many situations more restrictive than prison, so there are no more excuses for not being able to exercise. So, how can you use bodyweight exercises to build functional strength?
There are limitless combinations of exercises you can do using only your body weight. Here are a few examples of the exercises that have given me great results. Consider the muscles that are used to do isolated exercises such as bicep curls and bench presses, yet when you do bodyweight exercises such as pull-ups and push-ups, you use a wider range of muscle groups.
The burpee is an exercise that will give you a full body workout. You start off in a standing position, move to a squat and then throw your legs into a push-up position. Complete a push up and quickly draw both legs back under and spring up back to a stand. This combination will give you a fantastic arm and leg workout, and will give you some excellent cardio work as well.
Pull ups: a staple of any bodyweight routine. All you need is something overhead to hang from. Get yourself a wall mounted pull up bar if you can. You can do several different types of pull-ups such as the wide grip, narrow grip, overhand grip and the underhand grip, among others.
Another great exercise is the “dip” which can be completed between two chairs or any other supportive type of object. If you’re not in prison, you can get a real dip station as well. Lower your body to the point where both arms are parallel or less to the floor, and burst back upwards quickly. Dips will work your triceps and your chest muscles.

You can do all sorts of push ups, including conventional ones, decline push ups that work the upper chest, a closed grip version that works the triceps, wide grip push ups, dive bomb versions, hindu push ups, and even push ups done with only one arm.
Squats: these are as simple as they get. All you need to do is squat down, stand back up and repeat. Too easy? You can try out one-legged squats or even squat jumps.
Plyometrics: other great lower bodyweight exercises include a variety of plyometrics. These include lateral jumps, depth jumps, leap ups and step ups, all of which help to increase strength in the calf, hamstring and quad regions.
You could do crunches all day, but those won’t really help your abs. Do a simple plank routine that involves a straight body plank and both left and right side planks. Think planks are just an easy yoga exercise? Let me know when you get up to 3 minutes each on straight, left, and right planks.

Birds. Birds. Birds. Did I tell you I love birds? I love to watch them. I love to read about them. I talk to them. I listen for them. I dodge their droppings! Wear a hat!
So is it any wonder that I have lots of birding guides? And if one gets crumpled in the wear and tear of field use, I give it a rest and use another. Or when the binding finally goes and the pages fall out of my birding guides I will actually buy a new birding guide. I know. I know it is a bit frivolous but it is a passion of mine.
Naturally I have bird binoculars too. And that is more than one pair. I use my favorite bird binoculars most often. Those are the compact Bushnell binoculars that I can put in my pocket and take with me almost anywhere. Most people prefer a larger 8X42 model for their favorite bird binoculars but that is ok. I can take my Nikon 10×50 bird binoculars with me if I choose.
I have my wish list for bird binoculars and it includes Swarovski 10X42 but since they are so pricey, I added a compromise in my bird binoculars wish list. I think I would like a set of Vortex 10×42 Vipers. However, since I always choose my compacts unless it is a serious bird trip I would be delighted with Leica Ultravid 10×25 compact bird binoculars instead.
